TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR KEEPING SOWS
Superior sows:
• Provide an environment with a temperature of 18-200
C,
how the animals would feel comfortable
• Prevent sudden temperature differences,
large air currents (draughts) and dust
• Provide sufficient amounts of water. If they are sows
kept in a group, at least 1 drinking bowl should be provided for every 4
sow
• Control the body condition of the sow
• Regularly control consumption – whether sows
they eat everything from the feeders. If they don’t eat
the usual and expected amount of food – should
check the state of health and consult
with your veterinarian
• The program should be agreed with the veterinarian
health protection of sows, in order to also in the farrowing area, a
as well as in education, there are as few problems as possible
piglets (vaccination against parvovirus
infection, E. coli, clostridia…)
• The best hygienic conditions in the facility for seniors
we can get sows by working according to the system
„ALL INSIDE – ALL OUTSIDE“ attitude. On that one
way we can do a thorough cleaning of the object and
equipment (mechanical, with hot and cold water),
disinfection and that the facility remains empty for several days
to dry and evaporate these disinfectants.
After the mentioned procedures, sows
enter a clean and disinfected facility!
Sows in the farrowing house:
• Before introducing the sow into the farrowing house, it is desirable to
be clean, which can be achieved by washing or showering
• Before introducing sows into the building, it is necessary to thoroughly clean, wash and disinfect the building
• Provide a sufficient amount of fresh and clean water for
drink. It is desirable to give the sow an additional amount of water
and in the trough (and next to the existing watering hole), so that what
drank more water and replenished the lost fluid
from the last dusting
• Provide an environment with a temperature of 18-200
C,
to make the animals feel comfortable
• Provide sufficient amounts of fresh air, and yes
excessive air flow (draught) is avoided,
temperature fluctuations and dust in the air.
• The farrowing should be monitored, the piglets should be immediately placed on
the teat in order to suck the colostrum as soon as possible
• Control the birth weight of piglets (should
that the weight of the piglet is above 1.2 kg, and preferably yes
be over 1.5kg)
• Provide piglets with an additional heater (heater
plate or heating bulb), so that she does not catch a cold
piglet after farrowing and not to waste energy on
warming up
• It is desirable to even out the litter, by spreading the litter
